Making Money Job

Alongside -- and perhaps in front of -- Roger Altman, Gene Sperling is rumored to be the leading contender to succeed Larry Summers as director of the National Economics Council. At the moment, Sperling serves as an adviser (or, in the lingo of the Treasury, "counselor") to Timothy Geithner. For Sperling, the odd reality is that this means he's vying for a job he's already had once: He led the NEC from 1995-2000, and given both the economy's performance over that period and the perception that the Clinton White House ran fairly smoothly in its later years, you'd think he'd be a shoo-in.

But politically, Sperling has two problems. The first is that he took a lot of money from -- a term that should be distinguished from "went to work for" -- Goldman Sachs and two hedge funds. In 2008 and 2009, Sperling served as an adviser to the financial titan, making more than $800,000 for consulting. His duties at Goldman Sachs were primarily on a $100 million charitable project to help raise the skill levels of poorer women in developing nations, but in some ways, that makes the transaction more peculiar: You tend not to get paid that much for offering guidance to charitable endeavors. It is very hard to believe that Goldman Sachs wasn't attempting to buy influence with a politically savvy economist who had good relations -- and would later go to work for -- the incoming Democratic administration.

As Noam Scheiber reports, there's little evidence that Sperling has been particularly sympathetic to his former benefactors. He was the principal force behind the tax the administration levied on firms to pay back TARP. Sperling is also pretty far-flung from Wall Street itself. He's worked in politics pretty much his entire professional life, developing a reputation for insane hours and comical unkemptness in the Clinton administration, attaching himself to think tanks and writing a policy book ("The Pro-Growth Progressive") during the Bush years, and then joining the Obama White House in a position that was far beneath the role he'd served for Bill Clinton. If Sperling is intellectually and emotionally captured by anything, it's Washington, not Wall Street.

Nevertheless, perceptions matter in politics, and the Wall Street payout is the sort of arrangement that people loathe: Whatever it really was, and whatever Sperling saw it as, it sure looks like Goldman Sachs was buying itself some political insurance.

The second issue for Sterling could be seen as either a positive or a negative: He's already in the administration. So far, every major vacancy in the White House has been filled by someone else from the White House. Rahm Emanuel was replaced by Pete Rouse, Peter Orszag was replaced by Jack Lew. Christina Romer was replaced by Austen Goolsbee. The implication here is that President Obama believes his team is doing a good job, and that it doesn't need new members. But there are certainly people inside the White House making the case that for both political and policy reasons, some new blood would be a good thing.

What'll help Sperling there is that the administration never found a real outsider it liked -- and it may have concluded that an outsider isn't the right fit for an internal process job. The early interest in a CEO appears to have fizzled. The other leading candidate for the job is Roger Altman, a banker and former Clinton-administration official. That is to say, he shares most of Sperling's drawbacks, but doesn't have Sperling's advantages: experience running the NEC, experience with the personalities in this White House, and extended experience in politics, including during a previous period when a Democratic president had to negotiate with a Republican Congress. All of those qualities would be rather helpful in directing the activities of the administration's economic team going forward.

If any of you are writing to Governor Beshear of Kentucky about the life-sized Noah's Ark the state will be underwriting, don't wait for a reply — he's sending out a standardized form letter, which many people have been forwarding to me. Here it is, in case you haven't got one.

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about proposed "Ark Encounter" tourist attraction. I appreciate knowing your views.

Bringing new jobs to Kentucky is my top priority, and I believe this project will be beneficial to our future, providing an estimated 900 jobs and $250 million in annual revenue for the regional economy. The theme park is expected to draw 1.6 million visitors in the first year alone. I am excited to have another unique, family-friendly tourist attraction for the state.

The theme park will be funded by private developers at a cost of $150 million. The for-profit developers are seeking state tax incentives under the Kentucky Tourism Development Act - the same program used to help bring the state's first NASCAR race to the Kentucky Speedway. Any tax incentives the project may receive will come in the form of sales tax exemptions once the project is completed, and as long as it meets the guidelines under the Development Act.

The state has reviewed the project from a legal standpoint and, if the Noah's Ark application meets our laws, finds nothing unconstitutional about a for-profit company investing $150 million in Kentucky to create jobs and bring tourism to our state. The tax incentive law does not discriminate among religions and was not created specifically to benefit the theme park. The Tourism Cabinet also is in the process of reviewing the park's application for tax incentives to make sure the project can deliver on certain performance measures. This project is an investment in the future of the Commonwealth and is sure to bring people from across the country to Kentucky.

Again, thank you for sharing your views. As always, please feel free to contact me in the future whenever an issue is important to you.

Sincerely,

Steven L. Beshear

I feel like I've been slimed reading that.

First of all, it's not about jobs, and he knows it. That "900 job" estimate is, as near as anyone can tell, a fiction from a feasibility study cobbled together by one of Ken Ham's cronies, and which no one else has actually seen. The state will be coughing up more money than they're telling us, too: AiG is already asking for road expansion. What else can we expect them to ask for?

It's never just about jobs. If it were, the state would be expanding investment in education and would be taxing the churches. There are always other motives behind exactly what the state government will and will not support.

Come on. This project the governor is supporting only reinforces the stereotype of Kentucky as a state full of ignorant hillbillies and gullible rednecks, making the place a laughing stock. Seriously. Fred Flintstone-style dioramas and exhibits of people working with dinosaurs? Dragons, unicorns, and the Loch Ness monster touted as evidence for the Bible? The whole notion of the Ark itself is ludicrous and untenable…and Beshear is simply dismissing reason and evidence to promote superstition and folly in his state. Because it will part the rubes from their cash. That's cynical and contemptible.

If the governor were sincere in his desire to invest in the future of the state, he wouldn't be supporting miseducation and lies and a low-class, rinky-tink gang of pseudoscientific poseurs and bible-thumping con artists.

foreclosure list

This week’s sexy mocha goodness is 23-year old Darryl “LeBron” Stevenson. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Darryl currently resides in Manhattan.

His modeling career began shortly after he finished his service in the military. He had just moved back to New Jersey and his sister was very big into fashion shows and she was looking to pursue modeling. Darryl accompanied her to a casting one day and as they sat in the room full of prospects a scout came out to verify the cast list. When Darryl went unaccounted for on the list the scout asked if he planned to audition. He replied, “No.”  The scout said that he should and the room agreed, so Darryl was pretty much forced to apply despite his reluctance. And, he’s been modeling ever since.

When Darryl is not modeling he is an entrepreneur. He is a personal trainer/businessman. He trains clients whenever he has the opportunity.  “There is no better gratification than giving someone the gift of being fit and healthy,” Darryl said. “That kind of liberation leads to greatness in other areas of their lives. I’m happy to be able to impact others.”  Darryl helps to run a health food restaurant concept in the Chelsea area.  “I try to incorporate a healthier approach into everything that I do. And, by being health conscious I can live to do the things I love longer and stronger!”

“He Can Get It” Wednesday: Ben

I asked Darryl what he looks for in a woman and he said, “This is a question to which two years ago my answer would have been very different. I love a woman that appreciates the simplicity of a snow storm. She wouldn’t rather be anywhere other than under my arm when while watching a movie on the couch. If I said that I wanted to be the first man to walk on the sun she would support me. My perfect woman is motivated and tried. She knows what living life is about and is equipped to survive the hardships and embrace the lovingness it has to offer.  My ideal woman puts her best on not because she wants the world to think she’s beautiful, but because she wants to look just right for ‘her man.’ She has a smile that melts ice and my heart, and has an uniqueness about her that you just can’t pinpoint, but you see it prominently. My special girl doesn’t call me LeBron, she calls me button-nose. The girl most dear to me laughs with me when I’m funny, cries with me when I’m hurt, and cares for me when I bleed.  Any man would be lucky to have the woman I need and I’m lucky to know I have her.”

In his downtime, Darryl says he always have a great time especially when he can go out to a club and dance. “Dancing is something I have done for a long time,” Darryl said. “There’s no better feeling than being in the middle of the dance floor tearing it up. In my down time I love to play just about any sport. I played football since I was young, and then all through high school. I also played for a short time in college, so I have a great love for the game. Baseball and basketball are also my favorite past times. When I am not engaged in some form of physical activity I may be writing or working on a new song or watching a movie. Film is a hidden passion that I have, but I would love to be on a set filming a drama or a horror flick. You’d be surprised!”

Enjoy the photos of Darryl!

I, too, live in Modesto, CA, and was surprised but ultimately pleased to see our problems being discussed on a site with as wide a reach as Boing-Boing. So many other more fortunate places in the US are so bombarded with the message that the "recession" is over that any accurate descriptions of the conditions here and elsewhere in the Central Valley are usually dismissed as wild-eyed overstatement by anyone who hasn't seen it first-hand.

Another reason that so many of the foreclosures are or appear abandoned are the prevalence of "renter barons" in the area. For a while, it was a reasonably profitable business for Bay Area speculators and others to buy up a dozen houses or so in a neighborhood and rent them out to locals. However, when the bottom dropped out, many of these small businesses fell apart, or desperately sold off the homes to anyone who would buy them to cut their losses.

This resulted in a very large number of renters suddenly being forced out of their homes through no fault of their own. To make matters worse, many of those families were already in poor shape (thats over 15% unemployment poor - at one point nearly 20%) due to major labor cuts in the area, like the closing of the famous Hershey Plant in Oakdale, CA. So not only did the "refinance gamblers" get screwed in the collapse, but many responsible families were displaced and forced to make terrible compromises just to keep a roof over their already humble dinner tables. When three generations of a family are living under one roof not out of closeness but grim necessity, and the primary breadwinners make minimum wage, the "recession" is a full on depression.

Thats one of the main reasons that the Valley has so much anti-government sentiment right now - unfortunately, much of that has misguidedly lead the already conservative population to increasingly support the "Tea Party" movement's violent and disturbingly irrational rhetoric. They are, indeed, mad as hell, and not going to take it anymore; unfortunately, that only results in a sad, directionless rage, full of bitter soundbites and misinformed half-truths.

By the way, Guestimate Jones: There is no authority in the area dedicated to or responsible for mosquito abatement. The reason why? No budget money. Stanislaus County has a hard enough time fulfilling basic services due to the large tax losses; the roads in some places are comparable to the aftermath of minor earthquake sites, for example. Its so bad here that during certain years, we have even shut down our Animal Control services, despite this being a very rural county outside of Modesto. When you have a lost and frightened raccoon duking it out with your cat in your backyard at 2am, calling the cops results in a snickering reply of "well sorry sir, that's not our problem."

Companies Making Money

As we come to the end of 2010, I wanted to leave you all with a few gifts to wrap and give to your friends -- some small gems of health reform that may have escaped attention.

There are a variety of charts that show what health reform has and will achieve by the time it is fully implemented. Some of these charts are being used to scare people about the scope of this law. But these charts and timelines also show how complicated it would be to unravel this law, given that so many of the moving parts are linked together.

As I combed through these charts, I picked out the following 10 gifts -- something between the 8 nights of Hanukkah and the 12 days of Christmas:

1. Here are a package of gifts you should already know about --- In September of this year, the law began prohibiting lifetime limits on your coverage; denial of coverage because of pre-existing conditions for kids; a way for people with serious illness who have been without insurance for awhile to get into a state insurance program, and new prevention programs. And by the end of the year, seniors will have access to preventive services at no cost and the donut hole for prescription drugs will begin to disappear.

2. Do you know someone who has retired but is receiving retiree health insurance assistance from their employer? Are they worried about how they can afford to keep their health insurance or whether their employer will drop the coverage? In June of this year, the Secretary of HHS created a temporary $5 billion fund to hep employers provide health insurance to retirees 55 to 64. This replaces a prior government program that helped employers keep retirees health insurance active, so it's basically an incentive to companies to keep doing that.

3. What to give your friends who are always worrying about fraud and abuse in government programs? There are new efforts at catching doctors and hospitals who cheat Medicare and Medicaid programs with false claims. There was already a big sting in Florida where Medicare caught doctors making fake claims for fake patients to the tune of over $250 million. Monitoring fraud takes resources, but the return on investment is substantial.

4. We all know someone who worries about the costs of health care and thinks health reform will do nothing about it other than jacking up their premiums. There are actually hundreds of ways that reform is going to chip away at costs because of the law. One of the ways the government is going to ensure that your tax dollars and contributions to Medicare pay for what is really needed, is to pressure providers to become more efficient. We have had a system where doctors get paid more when they do more, no matter whether it cures you! Medicare will now begin to pay bonuses to doctors and hospitals that provide better quality care -- the better the quality, the better the bonus. No improvement in quality? Less money. Sounds sensible doesn't it? Should have been done a long time ago.

There will also be better state oversight of insurance companies that announce big increases in monthly premiums. Some states like Connecticut have given themselves the authority to actually deny these increases; other states will try to use persuasion, public shaming, or non-legal methods to keep premiums in line. Bottom line is that these big premium increases will not go unnoticed or unpublicized. And by 2014, you'll have a lot more choice of plans, because these same insurance companies will be directly competing for your business through the Exchanges. If you believe market forces can help keep costs under control, this type of consumer choice could make a difference.

5. What if you have a friend who lives in a rural area and their hospital is small or they have to travel a long way to get care? Health reform is putting resources into hospitals in those communities, to help them with telemedicine (sending your x rays to a medical center where an expert can read them or consulting with the country's expert on your diagnosis, etc.) and money for training physicians, nurses and other practitioners with enticements for them to practice in a rural area. This change may mean little to those of you who live in a big city, but there's nothing scarier than living in a rural area and getting really ill but not being able to get the care you need.

6. Do you have a family member who has dementia and is in some type of assisted living or nursing home? No matter how much you visit, you can't really guarantee they will get the care they need when you're not around. Caregivers who work in these facilities often work at minimum wage with very little training. Starting in March of next year, there will be money available to train staff in those facilities so they understand better how to care for these folks. The shocking fact is that:

According to recent estimates, as many as 2.4 million to 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimers Disease (AD). Unless the disease can be effectively treated or prevented, the number of people with AD will increase significantly if current population trends continue. That's because the risk of AD increases with age, and the U.S. population is aging. The number of people age 65 and older is expected to grow from 39 million in 2008 to 72 million in 2030, and the number of people with AD doubles for every 5-year interval beyond age 65.

If you've visited one of these places recently, no matter how good they are, there's so much more that needs to be done to make the lives of our elders better as they decline. This training doesn't require much money but it can do so much good.

7. Haven't you wondered why we still have a paper based system in health care, when you can go to an ATM anywhere in the country and get your account balance and money out? The reasons for lack of progress are many, but one of the reasons is that so few of the existing data systems talk to each other adequately. Even before health reform passed, President Bush put resources into upgrading our HIT systems, and health reform has given a big boost to that effort. Medicare, which is known to pay claims very slowly, has an outdated system that will be upgraded due to health reform. And doctors and hospitals will have some guidance from experts on how to implement a system whereby they can send your medical records to another facility instantly, should you get sick while you are traveling -- or where you can go online and look at your medical records, know when you need to get a screening or vaccination, see the results of the blood test you had yesterday. In my home town, we already have that and I love the speed and ease with which I can find this information.

8. Anyone hurting here? If you have a friend with chronic pain, you already know that it is truly hard to get good information about what works and what does not. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor. Even people like Rush LImbaugh who apparently was in a lot of pain recently, got addicted to oxycontin to manage his pain. He may not have known what the alternatives were, because there has not been a huge amount of attention paid to pain management in the past. If you want some real good research on pain and some objective ideas about how to manage it, starting in March of next year, there will be a special coordinating committee to look at pain research and report to Congress on its findings. Hopefully this will lead to options other than oxycontin.

9. Do you know someone who has had trouble finding a physician or who has lost access to the physician they used to have? Health reform releases money this year to train a variety of health professionals, help physicians in training get scholarships and loans, and encourage physicians to practice in rural or underserved areas. There will also be a national workforce committee to look at future needs for physicians and other professionals as we shift focus from emergency care to primary care.

10. Are you one of the people who feel that malpractice reform was neglected and that Democrats don't care about that? Starting in 2011, there will be funding for 5 year grants at the state level to take a close look at what is working and what is not to reduce litigation. We have a lot of interesting malpractice projects going in California, Texas, and other states, but we need to understand why some of these programs seem to reduce lawsuits while others make little impact at all. This has been a major Republican talking point, and this health reform law, which so few Republicans supported, actually puts some money to the problem of figuring out how to do it. It also makes it a state-based initiative, not a big federal mandate, something else Republicans should like. On the other side of the coin, for people who have actually been harmed by bad medical practice, health reform implemented this year a slew of new ways to appeal medical decisions, something the consumer public needs to have.

My point here is that there are many, many changes going on in the health care system at this very moment, and these changes are ultimately going to improve health care delivery. You may not hear much about them; in fact, you probably won't. But gradually we will see fewer medical errors (wrong legs being operated on), better customer service (fewer minutes on hold), more responsiveness from your physician (being able to use email with your doctor), and ultimately, lower costs (once everyone is "in" and paying their fair share).

Those are holiday gifts that won't have to be returned!

Le Web 10 host Loic Le Meur just finished his on-stage interview with Alexander Tamas, Partner at one of the most watched technology investment firms on the planet, DST / Mail.ru Group.

That’s quite a presence you have: Groupon, Zynga, Facebook and … Twitter?

Not Twitter (smiles).

What is DST?

The firm originated in Russia, grew out of social networking company called Mail.ru, and at some point we started making international investments. Facebook was our first one.

How big is your stake in Facebook now?

It’s hard to say, we’ve made some straightforward investments and then we bought as many shares from early employees and investors as possible. We’ve definitely invested more than $500 million in total though.

So Facebook was your first investment – how did that come about?

Well, we owned and ran a social network in Russia, but the dynamics there were different, we were actually ahead of most social sites. Every single one of our countries became really big. So, we knew there was money in it, and we realized quickly that it was only a matter of time for Facebook to become really large worldwide.

Did you lead the Mail.ru Group IPO as well?

Yes, that was last month.

Is it the biggest tech IPO in Europe to date?

In the past few years, yes. The initial market valuation was about $6 billion, we’re now at roughly $8 billion.

So when’s the Facebook IPO planned?

I don’t have any comments on that (smiles).

Do you sit on the Facebook board?

No we actually don’t, but we obviously have good relationships with management and other board members. our perspective is that it’s entirely possible to be a major investor in a company without being on the board, as long as you have an open dialogue with the people in charge.

You got in late, what was Facebook’s valuation at the time?

We got in at a $6.5 billion valuation. It’s difficult to say what the valuation is now – although I can tell you the secondary market ones are based on limited information and generally not super accurate.

We haven’t purchased Facebook shares in quite some time though.

The Zynga investment came after Facebook?

Yes.

Why haven’t they been acquired yet?

If you’re a founder of company like Zynga, with fast growth and massive revenues, it only makes you wealthy on paper, right. So you used to have two choices: sell or take it public. Now, companies can get liquidity early on, so it takes the pressure of.

We invested $150 million in Zynga, but we didn’t disclose at what valuation.

So Groupon was almost sold …

I can’t comment on the rumors, but I can tell you that they’re going for it. They realize they have something special and there’s a lot of potential for Groupon to become a generation-defining company. They’re shooting for the stars.

By the way, I’m always amazed when people discuss valuations of private companies without actually knowing the financials. The truth is most people can’t say whether investments come cheap or expensive, as commentators. It all depends on how you measure growth, and most people tend to think linearly.

When we invested in Groupon, they sold 4 million groupons, a month later it was 25% more. The potential was obvious. They’ll hit 20 million groupons sold next week.

How does a startup get an investment deal out of DST? Is Twitter big enough, as an example?

It’s definitely an interesting company, but there are more. What we look at is that you have to be on a path to become a clear leader in your segment, companies that could theoretically go public today. We want to know all companies, but we focus our investments on those with long-term sustainability.

You know, we’re not an early-stage investor. We’re really small, with no people on the ground. So we can’t really help companies when they’re just getting started, apart from writing a check, and that’s not what we want. There are many more capable firms for that.

So startups should give you a call when they hit a $1 billion valuation?

Not really, we’ll also talk to you if you’re clearly on a path to becoming a $1 billion company down the line.

What about Foursquare?

There are lots of opportunities for them, they’re seeing good growth, so it could become a really interesting company for sure.

You’re (sort of) a European fund – why don’t you invest more here?

Groupon, Zynga and Facebook really just happened to be US companies, we look all over the world for companies. We tick boxes, and we can do that anywhere.

Many of the startups in Europe for some reason want to sell out early. That’s not what we’re looking for. There aren’t enough role models here, so less confidence.

Do you look at Asia, more specifically India, China and Japan?

It’s definitely a geography we’re looking at. We know a lot of the companies there already.

What’s your advice for young entrepreneurs?

Not many people have the opportunity to really change the world. If you have an urge to build something that could, don’t focus on the money, but the legacy you’ll leave behind.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a generation-defining company, so I applaud people for shooting for the stars. It’s a much more rewarding thing than doing it for the money.

I mean, look at Le Web, it’s not just about the money right, it’s also the community, helping out startups throughout Europe.

Loic: yes, we actually got a few offers, but we’re not looking at that right now.

Sean Park is so excited about Betterment that he bought a stake in the company:

Betterment allows anyone to quickly, easily and without mystery manage asset allocation and risk budgeting using a simple, multi-asset class portfolio. No hassle, no time wasted, no blizzard of trade confirmations. The first time I saw it, I immediately wanted to be able to manage all my cash balances using their platform.

Except Sean Park is a sophisticated venture capitalist, and Betterment doesn’t manage cash balances. Instead, it manages investments. Basically, it provides an easy way of sweeping money out of your checking account and into your Betterment account, where it’s then invested across eight different ETFs. Betterment does most of the asset allocation; you just tell the company how much you want invested in Treasuries and how much in stocks, and they will do the rest.

This is a handy little service — but the amount that Betterment charges — 0.9% per year — is way too much, especially since it comes on top of the expense ratios of the underlying ETFs, which net out at 18.2bp for stocks and 17.5bp for bonds. In these days of ultra-low interest rates, buying a bond fund and then paying out 107.5bp per year in expenses is likely to leave you with a negative real return, and quite possibly could leave you with a negative nominal return as well. Or, to put it another way, right now it makes very little sense to have Betterment manage your bond funds and charge you a 90bp fee for the privilege: you might well be better off just keeping your money in a savings account, where there’s no risk of a nominal decline.

The idea behind Betterment — that investing should be very easy and simple at the front end, even if there’s lots of complicated stuff going on at the back end — is a good one. And I look forward to the time when banks offer Betterment-style services to their depositors, making it easy and painless to save money. I’m sure those banks could learn a lot from what Betterment is doing, and even maybe license some of their technology. But it only really becomes attractive when it’s free. And when, at the very least, it gives some kind of an option to invest internationally and in credit — two enormous asset classes that Betterment completely ignores. I’m pretty sure that Sean Park, for one, would never find it genuinely attractive in its current incarnation.

Update: Betterment’s CEO, Jon Stein, responds in the comments, and he sure knows the way to a blogger’s heart — by referencing an old blog entry which even I’d forgotten about:

I agree with you that we should offer our customers exposure to international stocks. Our users are all US-based, and so are naturally overweight US. We plan to add international exposure soon, and perhaps a real-estate component or credit component, as well. All of these asset classes are components of the “market portfolio” – and would be represented in the “everything bagel” that you talked about in a previous post. It’s that everything bagel that we’re working toward – it takes time to make it just right.

Making Money Opportunities

Income inequality is about to get worse, according to David Segal's article in Sunday's New York Times. Those of us not in the beneficiary column, the article suggests, had better start thinking of which "artisanal services" we can provide. In short, we need to identify what the rich need and start making those widgets tout de suite.

Paraphrasing Professor Caplin of NYU, Segal wrote:

"While it's noble to focus on how to spread wealth around, it might be wiser to think of ways the poor and middle class could cater to the economy's biggest winners."

The Republican Party has staked out a position where anything to the left of extreme selfishness is on the slippery slope to socialism. But it hasn't occurred to Democrats to counter with the more real scenario of creeping aristocracy.

And what do we hear from the White House? Talk about compromise, common ground and caution.

The administration keeps saying that the American people want a meeting of the minds -- they want the parties to work together. Do they really think that means at any cost?

Americans want Social Security to be there when they need it. They want their homes and their jobs back. They don't want their kids fighting on foreign soil so they can cater to the "biggest winners" when they get home. And, yes, they don't want more money going to fat cats in gigantic financial swindles while their own and their children's opportunities are taken away.

If we don't keep sending that message to Washington, then we will become a country of winners and losers, aristocrats and serfs.

Are you an unemployed, funemployed or underemployed musician? Well, music collaboration platform Indaba Music has your back, as it has just launched an “Opportunities Marketplace” for band folk in need.

Indaba, which we’ve referred to previously as a “LinkedIn of music,” boasts more than 500,000 musicians, provides musically inclined folks with a place to build a profile, promote their tunes and collaborate with other musicians from around the world.

It also has a ton of contests and work-for-hire opps that can garner some serious pocket dough for bands. Twenty-six recordings sourced through Indaba Music have been released by major record labels, and unknown bands have scored the chance to collaborate with the likes of Linkin Park and Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo.

Now, Indaba is making it easier for bands to find opportunities by launching a dedicated platform on which musicians, brands, marketers and others can connect. Big-name artists can host remix contests (a staple of Indaba), A&R reps can find new content, those in the entertainment biz can seek out music for TV and film, etc. Think of it as a bulletin board in a coffee shop — with a lot better opportunities than the chance to play bass in someone’s mediocre synth/jazz band.

“Musicians now have even more ways to get discovered and earn a living using Indaba Music,” says Indaba co-founder Matthew Siegel.  “The core of Indaba is about collaboration and content creation, which can be a recreational activity; but in the case of the Opportunity Marketplace, we can also generate serious recognition and income.”

Right now, the Marketplace only features contests, but more opportunities will be added soon, we’re told.
